Back to school is right around the corner or it may have even started in your neck of the woods! Since we are in the season of learning, I thought this would be the perfect time to address some social media basics. Read below if you are ready for social media content marketing for newbs and a refresher for the seasoned professional!
Let’s dive in!
Social media can be a very effective way to market your business. In order for it to be effective, you must have your foundation in place first. So many times, newbies to the social media world believe that all it takes to drive sales is an account on Instagram, a post on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter, and a blog about their personal experiences…
That’s not how it works. It’s time to get back to basics!
Back to Basics #1: Know your market
This piece of advice is all over the internet, and with good reason! If you don’t take the time to really narrow down your market and pick your niche, I promise you, success for your business will be a very long, slow, arduous process. When I was first starting out and I didn’t really knew who I was serving, I was confused by the premise of knowing who my ideal client was. If that sounds like you, do what I did to help you get started. Pick your favorite customer and client and then look for more that match their demographics.
Back to Basics #2: Start with 1 platform and then diversify
Now that you know who your ideal client is or you have picked a specific niche, it’s time to select social media platforms. One of the best things you can do for your business is to select the 1 social media platform where the majority of your audience hangs out. If your niche or ideal client tends to hang out on Facebook, make sure you DOMINATE THE PLATFORM by:
- Understanding the algorithm and the type of content and engagement that gets you favorable exposure
- Use all the features available on the platform to dominate
- Know how to create content that fits the platform – what works on Instagram won’t work well on Facebook
- Invest in engagement – know what your audience is looking for in terms of engagement and deliver on that
Once you feel confident and are dominating your number one platform, expand to the second most popular platform with your audience and follow the same process.
Back to Basics #3: Lead with value
The fastest way you can grow on social media is to lead with value. You will know if your content is valuable to your audience if you are able to get the social media hat trick response. What is the social media hat trick? I am so glad you asked! If the following 3 things happen when you post something on social media, you will know that you are winning with your audience:
- SHARE: Your audience loves to share your content. It makes them look good (and smart!) when they are able to provide their friends with good content. Hint: good content usually entertains, educates, inspires, or rewards your audience
- SAVE: If your content is valuable enough
Back to Basics #4: Understand the value of hashtags
Hashtags are what make you, your brand, and your content searchable. Take the time to research the best hashtags for your business. Make sure you include a healthy mix of branded, local, and industry hashtags when you use them on posts.
Back to Basics #5: Learn how to engage and network
Engaging and networking is the backbone of social media. If you are using social media just to sell, you are missing out on your ideal client or customer. Your ideal client or customer is looking for you to:
- Connect with them
- Start a conversation
- Learn from you
- Get helpful tips
- Be inspired by you
- Entertain them
- Learn more about you
- Be a part of your world
If you were to share a social media content basic, which one would it be? Post it in the comment section. I would love to hear from you!
