7 Things You Need to Know Before You Write Your Next Instagram Caption

Instagram seems to be picking up some steam lately.  With its new launch of IGTV and the extensive reach and engagement potential there is, it’s no wonder the app is wildly popular.  Much of the allure of Instagram is that is focuses on a visual experience. But, even though a picture is worth 1,000 words, the written word also delivers enormous impact!  To make sure your Instagram posts make a powerful splash, consider these 7 Things You Need to Know Before You Write Your Next Instagram Caption.

  1. Storytelling

Every picture tells a story.  While pictures are a good way to convey an idea or tell a story, words can make the impact even stronger.  Take the time to tell a story or deliver a lifestyle message through your caption.

  1. Length

Don’t go overboard when telling your Instagram story.  Even though you are able to use up to 2,200 characters in your caption, you may want to rethink how many you will actually use.  People don’t have a lot of time to spend reading. To make sure your message gets across, consider who you audience and how much time they will actually spend reading your IG caption content.  A good rule of thumb when it comes to IG caption length is: 138 – 150 characters. This gives the reader enough information to pique their curiosity and interact/engage with your brand by asking more questions.  Engagement on social media is gold. Not only does it open the doors to communication with your ideal customer but engagement also helps boost your algorithm rank.

  1. Ask Questions

Speaking of engagement, give your audience a reason to engage with you.  Start asking them questions to get the ball rolling and see where the conversation takes you.

  1. Call to Action

Don’t forget to include a call to action with each an every post.  Your audience needs to be told what to do next. Should they visit your Instagram bio for more details, click a link to get a download, or check out your latest IG story before it expires?  If you don’t include a call to action in your post, you risk losing their attention to the next post that appears in their feed. Do all that you can to keep your audience engaged.

  1. Hashtags

Did you know that posts with hashtags get 12.6% more engagement than those without?  Not only can hashtags help you improve your engagement efforts but they can help you be found on Instagram.  Especially now that Instagram allows you to follow hashtags! Make use of the 30 hashtags Instagram allows you to use in order to connect with your ideal audience.  For more information about hashtags and how to select them, visit my blog post entitled: “Foolproof Tips For Crushing Your Hashtag Strategy.”

  1. Mention

Take the time to mention other accounts and people in your caption.  Word of warning, only do so if the caption you just wrote is applicable to the person you are tagging.  The point of mentioning key people and accounts in your posts is to get their attention and continue the conversation.  Tagging and mentioning people in hopes of boosting your Instagram popularity without adding any value is considered to be spam and the repercussions of spammy behavior can lead to people blocking your and your account being suspended.

  1. Emojis

Add some character, life, emotion, and fun in your posts.  Use emojis to continue telling the story!
